Abstract
999,226. Zone-melting. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 47858/63. Heading B1S A rod produced from metal powder by pressure compacting or slip-casting is zone-melted by electron bombardment in a vacuum. Incipient fusion may be effected by preheating, e.g. for 30 minutes in hydrogen or a vacuum, or by the first pass of the molten zone. The rod may be horizontal or vertical. The rate of zonemelting may be 5 mm./minute. The molten zone may be passed in both directions to effect zone-levelling of an alloy. Metals specified are tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, rhenium, osmium, ruthenium, platinum, yttrium, vanadium, chromium, and iron. Tungsten powder may have been compacted at a pressure of 20,000 p.s.i. to produce a bulk density which is 60% of the theoretical. As shown, a rod 28, which acts as an anode, is passed to and fro through a circular tungsten cathode 32 in a vacuum vessel 10. Specification 826,132 is referred to.
