Abstract
1,263,283. Producing refractory metals. REDERIAKTIEBOLAGET NORDSTJERNAN AXEL JOHNSON INSTITUTET FOR INDUSTRIFORKSNING. April 9, 1969 [April 9, 1968; Feb. 7, 1969], No. 18305/69. Heading C7D. [Also in Division C1] Ores of refractory metals, such as W, U, Nb, Ta, Zr or Hf, are treated with an excess of one or more reducing agents (e.g. Si or Al) to form a refractory metal-reducing agent alloy, which is solidified, crushed and treated with Cl 2 , F 2 or Br 2 to give mixed halides which are separated (e.g. by distillation or fractional condensation), the refractory metal halides then being reduced (e.g. by melt electrolysis, or using hydrogen, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal as the reductant). W made by this process is especially suitable for making tungsten carbonyl.
