923,358. Automatic control of moving webs. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 2, 1961], No. 4148/62. Class 38 (4). In an arrangement for controlling a moving suspended web of flexible material, the transit time of sound signals transmitted to the web and reflected therefrom is electronically evaluated. As shown, a moving web 1 is fed over rollers 3, 4 into a sag-pit 2. Sound signals from a transmitter 5 are initiated by a pulse-generator 7 and the reflected sound pulse is received by a receiver 6. The time between the leading edge of the transmitted pulse and the leading edge of the received pulse determines the length of a pulse from a pulse former 8 which is a measure of the transit time. This transit pulse is fed to an input of an actual-to-nominal valve comparator 9 wherein it opens a gate 9b to permit a signal from a quartz crystal oscillator 9a to pass to a counter 9c. The number of cycles of the oscillator signal occurring during the duration of the transit pulse is compared with a preset nominal valve signal 9e. The differential output of the counter 9c, through a digital-to-analogue converter 9d, controls a driving equipment 10 for a feed-roller 11 and a take-off roll, not shown, so as to maintain the sag constant. The equipment 10 comprises a Ward-Leonard system supplying the motors driving the feed and take-off rollers and the converter controls a booster generator in the supply to the feed-roll motor. It is stated that the nominal valve signal may be varied in dependence upon the web speed so as to keep constant the time for which the material is in the sag-pit. It is also stated that the gate 9b may be controlled directly by the transmitted and received pulses.
