[Also in Division G3] In a system for controlling the tension of strip material in accordance with a control signal, an ultrasonic beam is transmitted towards and received after reflection from the strip and the control signal is derived from transmitted and received signals. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 for controlling the rate of conveyance of rubber tyre-tread strip 10 through cooling and drying apparatus, the echo time of an ultrasonic pulse reflected from a strip loop 18 formed between conveyers 16 and 20 is determined by unit 68 which provides a motor-speed control signal for adjusting the relative speeds of conveyers 16 and 20 to maintain the loop size constant. Details of cooling and drying apparatus employing several conveyers and associated ultrasonic speedcontrols are given (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown). In the second embodiment (Fig. 4) the rotational speed of a drum (92) on to which strip material is wound is slowed, as the winding diameter increases, in accordance with a control signal derived from an ultrasonic system in which the ultrasonic beam is reflected from the peripheral surface of the winding. In a modification the ultrasonic beam is continuous instead of pulsed. The control signal for the first or second embodiment is then derived by comparing the phases of the transmitted and received signals.
