Abstract

1,041,395. Automatic control of webs. A. WINDMOLLER and M. GENNERICH [trading as WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER. Sept. 16,1963 [Oct. 15, 1962], No. 36291/63. Heading G3R. Small corrections to the lateral position of a paper or plastics web 1 are automatically made by sideways movement of a pivoted frame 7 carrying rollers 5, 6 close to edge feeler 16, and large corrections are effected by axial movement of supply reel 3 when the frame 7 reaches the limits of its range. Pulse signals from edge feeler 16 are amplified at 17 and operate a moving coil regulator 18 controlling a fluid operated piston 15 connected to the frame 7. Frame limit switches 21, 22 may directly effect energization of a motor M to cause appropriate axial movement of reel 3 when one is closed, but as shown, the switches control relays 23, 24 and the arrangement is such that, while they are closed, the motor M is energized for a limited time period, determined by a timing relay 29, each time a cam-operated pulsing contact 33 is closed. The cam is driven from the web feeding mechanism, so that the frequency of the pulses is related to web speed and is such that between pulses the web advances from reel 3 to the feeler 16.
