In a strip feed a measuring device responsive to the amount of strip passing controls the strip feed so as to pass an exact length of material The invention is described with reference to feeding a strip by rollers 10,12 driven by a speed controlled motor 14 to a shear 68. The amount of strip passing a pair of measuring rollers 11 driven by the strip is determined by a pair of cams 31, 32 carried on a disc 29 rotated through gearing. The cams rock the rotor of a magslip 33 supplied with a reference voltage 34 to provide an output which is converted into a D.C. signal by a phasesensitive device 36 and compared in an adding circuit 37 with the output of a tacho-generator 38 driven by the feed motor 14. Any difference controls an amplifier 23 which unbalances the fields of a generator 18 to provide an armature supply to the motor. In operation the shear closes switch 25 after cutting to cause a relay unit 26 to put the amplifier under the control of the magslip output. The cam follower runs down one cam and up the other and during this period controls the motor speed so that it stops when precisely the correct amount of material has proceeded to the shear. The device is provided with a fine adjustment consisting of further magslip devices initially set up by dials 47, 49 to give the final adjustment of length. Fine magslip receivers 42, 50 used alternately are mounted in the measuring unit and driven from the strip through gearing 43. When the strip is within a short distance of its final position a microswitch 44 is operated to actuate a changeover relay 45 to put amplifier 23 under control of say fine magslip 42. The output of the device is compared with the setting of magslip 46 via follow through magslips 59, 60 so that the strip feeds stop when they are equal. At this time the other magslip is brought into action by means of the output from relay unit 51. The output from the fine magslip in use is converted into a D.C. voltage in phase-sensitive rectifier 54, compared at 55 with the output of tacho-generator 58 driven by a servo 56 and used to control a split field motor to reposition the magslip just used via the appropriate follow through. At the same time relay unit 65 also changes over the reference signal to the other follow through magslip. Specification 942, 819 is referred to.
