[Also in Division G3] A method of continuous casting comprises the steps of ascertaining during the casting operation and in a range in which the casting shall have a predetermined skin thickness in accordance with the requirements of the material at least periodically the skin thickness and of using the measured values for controlling the machine in the sense of these requirements. In the preferred embodiments the measured skin thickness is compared with the predetermined nominal skin thickness and the machine controlled by means of the deviations appearing, either manually or automatically, for example the output signals may control a Ward-Leonard set driving the casting withdrawal rolls, and a cooling fluid valve for the secondary cooling of the casting. In one embodiment, Figs. 2, 2a, an ultrasonic transmitter 21 in a water-cooled roller 23 emits waves which are reflected towards a receiver 22 at points of transition a-e between different states of the casting, so there is obtained a sequence of pulses, Fig. 2a, repeated at regular time intervals t1. The pulse sequence is evaluated to form signals corresponding to the skin thickness. A signal representing the nominal skin thickness is introduced so that an output control signal appears only when the actual skin thickness deviates from the predetermined value. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, the ultrasonic waves penetrate the casting and are received by a receiver 51 opposite the transmitter 50. Cooling water jets 54, 55 are used as a coupling means for transmitting the waves to the casting and as electrodes to apply a voltage to the water vapour film so that the transmission of the waves is not hindered thereby. In other embodiments radio-active rays or an electrical current are passed transversely through the casting. The skin thickness is measured continuously but to avoid instability the control signals are delivered at timed intervals. Alternatively, there may be pulse counters which observe deviations at time intervals and only after a predetermined excess of pulses departing in one direction from the nominal value is a control order for adjusting released. An additional condition, such as the surface temperature of the casting, may also be measured and taken into consideration in the functions of adjusting, the said temperature being measured as by a platinum-rhodium thermo-element or a ray-pyrometer and producing a signal when it deviates from a predetermined nominal temperature. The temperature may be measured at several points to exert separately or by means of an average value its influence on the control.
