A valve 50 for controlling the discharge of material from hopper 2 has two valve parts 25, 29 and is operated by handle 13 acting through lever 10 and stem 7. The position of handle 13 is defined by the engagement of wedge 20 with either of notches 18 or 19. In use, the operator swings handle 13 from the valve-open position at stop 17 anti-clockwise to insert the wedge 20 into notch 19, as shown. This lowers the first valve part 29 into contact with the hopper inside surface, as shown, to prevent discharge. The operator then moves the handle so that wedge 20 lodges in notch 19. This causes the second valve part 25 to move against spring 30 into engagement with the hopper inside surface. In this way, the first valve part screens the second valve part, and allows it to close the hopper free from obstruction.
