A buffer arrangement which may be modified for use as drawgear or combined buffer and drawgear comprises a rubber or helical spring 4, Fig. 1, operating at first in series with a metal ring or split-ring column of springs 5 contained by a slidable auxiliary cylinder 6 provided with stops 10 for the plunger 2. When the plunger 2 abuts the stops 10 however the spring 4 will no longer be compressed, and further buffing movement will be resisted by the spring 5 alone. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a rod 8 moving with the plunger 2 slides within a movable guide 18. The springs in this case first operate in series until the plunger 2 contacts the stops 10, then the spring 5 is alone compressed until the guide 18 contacts the base 12. Still further movement then compresses the springs 4 and 5 in parallel up to the limit where the stops 10 contact the base 12. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the rear end of the spring 5 fits over and is located by a hollow spigot flanged rearwardly to the size of the inner diameter of the cylinder 1, and a cushioning rubber pad is provided between the flange and the base 12. In drawgear in Fig. 5 (not shown) the column or rubber springs 4 is replaced by a set of rubber pads 4<SP>1</SP>, the casing 1 is stationary, and a movable casing 2 is connected by means of a yoke 20 to a drawhook 19.
