A buffer which may include a hydraulic arrangement, comprises telescopic components 10, 12 with a helical coil spring between them and a plug 22 of elastomeric material lying within the coil, the plug being laterally expansible during buffer compression into progessively increasing contact with the inner surface of the coil.
