921,829. Damping means In winding- machines. BARMER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. Feb. 26, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6890/60. Class 120 (2). [Also in Group XXXII] In a thread winding arrangement in which the package or packages are driven at the axis or axes and/or by friction at the periphery, the drifting part thereof (which may comprise the package support, the package driving roller or a package supporting roller) is hydraulically damped by a piston which is mounted thereon and moves in a partially open container of damping fluid. In the form shown the drifting part takes the form of a package holder support 1 which is restrained to move in only one direction by guide rods 9 and 12 engaging, respectively, a ball guide 8 and rollers 10, 11 on the support. The packages 5 and 6 are mounted on a spindle 2 and are pressed into contact with the fixed driving roller 7 by means of a weighted cable (not shown). Also attached to the support on an arm 18 is the damping piston 19 which, for at least part of its travel, moves in a tubular portion of the liquid-filled open trough 20. The portion of the trough associated with the cylinder is an adjustable screw plug 22 which has a tapering inside bore so that the damping effect is reduced as the package grows. An excess pressure valve is provided in the piston. The piston and tubular extension may be exchangeable for different working conditions.
