Abstract

1,109,398. Winding apparatus. CELANESE CORPORATION. 29 Sept., 1965 [1 Oct., 1964], No. 41318/65. Heading D1J. In this yarn winding apparatus the wire of the package is fixed and as the package increases in diameter a carrier carrying the following components is displaced:-(a) a drive roll engaging the surface of the package, (b) a traverse guide and traverse mechanism; the traverse guide being arranged to direct yarn onto the drive roll and the latter to transfer the yarn onto the package. In the particular embodiments the carrier is vertically displaceable by fluid pressure and where the drive roll is above the package the fluid pressure is such as to counterbalance partly the weight of the carrier, whereas where the drive roll is below the package the fluid pressure is such as to provide more force than is needed to counterbalance the weight of the carrier. Mounted on the carrier are individual motors for the operation of the traverse guide and drive roll. Varying pressure between drive roll and package. In Fig. 4, as the package 25 increases in diameter the carrier 49, on which is mounted the drive roll 31, traverse guide 33 and traverse drive 51, is forced downwardly against a fluid pressure between the upper end of a movable cylinder 65 and a fixed piston 67. The cylinder 65 is coupled to the carrier 49 and carries a pivotally mounted lever arm 85 resting on a pin 89. With the cylinder 65 and carrier 49 in their uppermost setting the pin 89 supports the lever arm 85 at its midpoint and the weight of the lever arm 85 does not weigh on the cylinder 65. On the carrier 49 descends the lever arm 85 moves to settings such as that indicated in broken lines and then weight is added to the cylinder 65 to increasingly decrease the upward force acting on the drive roll 31. Fig. 8 (not shown) also uses a pivoted lever arm 148 to ensure that for a drive roll 32 pressing downwardly on a package 26, the pressure between package and drive roll will gradually decrease as the package increases in diameter.
