A device for equalizing the speeds at which yarns are withdrawn from a number of freely rotatable packages comprises for each package at least one friction roller which bears upon the surface of the package with an adjustable contact pressure, all the friction rollers being interconnected for rotation at the same peripheral speed. In Fig. 1 friction rollers 14,15 bear against the surfaces of packages 7, 8 of a double twist doubling device and are constrained to have the same peripheral speed by an interconnecting belt 18 which passes about them and also about guides which may, as shown, be idler rollers 16,17 or alternatively plain guide pins. The friction rollers 14,15 are mounted on the arms 12,13 of a U-shaped bracket which is rotatably mounted in and at right angles to a supporting rod 10 journalled in a support 1 and biased by a spring 11 to give the required contact pressing between the rollers and the packages. The rollers 14,15 may be grooved to receive belt 18 so that only the rollers contact the packages or it may be arranged that the rollers contact the packages through the belt only. In a further form each friction roller is mounted on its own bracket so that the biasing force on each bracket may be individually adjusted. In Fig. 6, in which yarn is drawn from three packages, rollers 33, 34 for packages 30, 31 are mounted on a common bracket 26 while a roller 32 for the package 29 is mounted on its own bracket 25, a flexible shaft 35 serving as the interconnecting means. Alternatively the carrier 25 may be similar to carrier 26 and carry two rollers in which case the package 30 would be engaged by two rollers coupled only through the surface of the package. A further pair of interconnected, biased rollers may be arranged between packages 29 and 31 so that each package is engaged by two rollers. In Fig. 8 a shaft 37 of a friction roller 36 is extended into a gear-box 38,pivotable about the arm 10 so that the friction rollers may be driven via the gear-box. Such a device is preferably used only when withdrawn of thread begins, automatic means for then switching out the drive being provided.
