In apparatus for upending cans 30 moving in series with their axis disposed in the direction of movement, the cans pass from a shoot 1 between a pair of endless belts 2, 3 and thence to a runway 20 of V-shaped cross-section in the end of which a longitudinally adjustable peg 22 is disposed, the arrangement being such that the peg lies just below the bottoms of the cans on the runway and projects into a position in which it engages and steadies each can as it falls from the end of the runway into upright position on a rotary disc 23. When longer cans 43 are to be upended the runway 20 and peg 22 are disposed at a correspondingly higher elevation, Fig. 4, and a magnet 40 is disposed below the disc 23, which is of stainless steel or other non-magnetic material, to prevent the can falling over on landing. A pair of endless belts may be disposed within the runway 20 to convey the cans along it. The belts 2, 3 are caused to grip the cans by a spring-loaded roller 17 co-operating with a fixed roller below the upper run of belt 3. Guide members 26, 27 guide the cans from the disc 23, a deflector 29 removing any cans still on the disc beyond the discharge point.
