Abstract

872,495. Tea withering apparatus. CROMBIE, P. Jan. 6, 1960 [April 10, 1959], No. 12261/59. Class 34(2) A tea withering apparatus comprises an air heated chamber 1 through which trays 6, on which the tea is spread at 8, are conveyed in a zig-zag fashion in a series of horizontal traverses by a pair of parallel, spacedapart chain conveyers 3 to which the trays are pivotally secured by pins 7 to a discharge point 11. The chains are threaded over rows of driven sprockets 5 which raise or lower and also reverse the direction of travel of the chains, and one row is movable to adjust the tension of the chains. The trays have wheels 12 which run on runner angles 13 between the chains, the leading wheels engaging guides 14 when negotiating the turn-about at the ends of the chamber, while the trailing wheels lift a latch 16 which normally closes a gap 15 in the runner angle to permit the wheels to move from one runner angle to the next without moving from the horizontal plane. The latch falls back into position under its own weight when the wheels start in the reverse direction to provide a bridge over the gap.
