Abstract

929,061. Endless conveyers. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Dec. 4, 1959 [Dec. 5, 1958], No. 39315/58. Class 78 (1). An endless conveyer for elevating sacks and other articles comprises inner and outer pairs of endless chains 7 and 8, respectively, and a series of canvas flaps 1, each having a leading portion 23 which is secured to two spaced crossbars 15, 16 extending between the chains 7, and a trailing portion 24 the trailing edge of which is secured to a cross-bar 17 extending between the chains 8. The chains are arranged such that on the ascending run 3 of the conveyer the chains 8 are separated horizontally and rearwardly from the chains 7 so that the portions 24 of the flaps are horizontal to support the sacks &c. while on the loading and unloading sections 2, 4 of the conveyer the portions 24 overlap the portions 23 to form a continuous surface. Plates 28 return any sack falling from a flap to the next following flap and are arranged to pivot upwardly if contacted by a projecting sack being elevated. The sacks are positioned on the flap portions 24 as they leave the loading section 2 by a conveyer belt 29, Fig. 4, which engages the sacks by its lower and end runs 37a, 37, respectively. The frame 30 carrying the belt 29 is pivoted about the shaft of lower pulley 31 and rests against an adjustable stop 36, any pivoting of the frame caused by a sack jamming between the end run 37 and a flap resulting in a switch being operated to discontinue the drive to the chains 7, 8 and the belt 29.
