Abstract

Relates to new penicillins of the general formula <FORM:0920300/IV(a)/1> and non-toxic salts thereof where R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 represent a halogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, acyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocyclic, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, aralkoxy, alkenyl, alkenyloxy, alkenylthio, mercapto, alkylthio, arylthio, aralkylthio, acyloxy, acylthio, acylamino, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylsulphamyl, dialkylamino, sulphamyl, amino or nitro group or R2, R3 and R4 represent a hydrogen atom, the substituents being the same or different and at least one being an amino group. The penicillins and their nontoxic salts may be prepared by reacting 6-amino-penicillanic acid or a neutral salt thereof with an acid chloride, bromide, anhydride or mixed anhydride derived from a carboxylic acid of the general formula <FORM:0920300/IV(a)/2> in which the amino groups are protected, and thereafter removing the protecting group or groups, or by hydrogenating a corresponding nitro, nitroso or arylazo penicillin. Examples describe the preparation of 2-methoxy-6-aminophenyl penicillin and 3-amino-2,6-dimethoxyphenyl penicillin.
