Abstract

Penicillins of general formula <FORM:1061335/C2/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, where R is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic group which may be substituted and X is H, or an alkoxycarbonyl, aralkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl or acyl group; are prepared by (A) reacting an aminopenicillin of general formula <FORM:1061335/C2/2> where R has the above meaning, with an acid chloride of formula CICONH.NHX, where X has the above meaning other than H; or (B) reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid or a salt thereof with a reactive derivative of an acid of formula <FORM:1061335/C2/3> wherein R and X have the above meanings other than H. Penicillins of general Formula I where X is hydrogen are prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of penicillins of general Formula I in which X is a benzyloxycarbonyl or substituted benzyloxycarbonyl group. Typical compounds are 6-(D-a -hydrazino carbonylamino - a - phenylacetamido) - penicillanic acid and 6 - (D - a - benzyloxy carbonylhydrazocarbonylamino - a - phenylacetamido) penicillanic acid. The penicillins are useful in the treatment of humans and animals.
