Abstract

The invention relates to anti-bacterial 6-(substituted-hydroxyamidino) penicillanic acids of formula <FORM:1086958/C2/1> wherein R corresponds to the group R of a side chain R-CO- present as a substituent on the 6-amino group of a known penicillin, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. Many specific formulae are given of preferred penicillins within the general Formula I. Examples describe the preparation of potassium 6-(phenylhydroxyamidino) penicillanate, potassium 6 - (31 - nitrophenylhydroxyamidino)-penicillanate, potassium 6 - (41 - nitrophenyl-hydroxyamidino) penicillanate and N,N1 dibenzyl ethylenediamine 6 - benzylhydroxyamidino penicillanate. The penicillins are prepared by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid, or a salt thereof, with an aldoxime of formula <FORM:1086958/C2/2> wherein X is chloro or bromo and R has the above meaning. Salts are prepared with inorganic and organic bases, e.g. sodium, procaine and N-ethyl piperidine salts. A therapeutic composition comprises a 6-substituted hydroxyamidino penicillanic acid of Formula I and a pharmaceutical carrier.
