Abstract

1,051,675. Penicillins. BEECHAM GROUP Ltd. Nov. 11, 1965 [Dec. 3, 1964], No. 49124/64. Heading C2A. Penicillins of general formula and their non-toxic salts, where R is an alkyl aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclic group which may be substituted, R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1-6 alkyl and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are the same or different and each is H, C 1-6 alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl; are prepared by treating 6-aminopenicillanic acid, or a salt thereof, with a reactive derivative of an acid of formula:- wherein R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> have the above meanings. Alternatively, an α-aminopenicillin of formula may be treated with a reactive derivative of an acid of formula wherein R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> have the above meanings. Typical compounds are 6-[D-α-(pchlorophenoxyacetamido) - α - phenylacetamido]- penicillanic acid, 6 - [D - α - (2 - naphthoxyacetamido) - α - phenylacetamido] - penicillanic acid and 6-[D-α-methoxyacetamido-α-phenylacetamido)-penicillanic acid.
