920,265. Reciprocating pumps. COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 9, 1960], No. 4621/60. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A stationary valve plate 22, for a rotating- cylinder block pump and having arcuate inlet and outlet ports 20, 21 with which each cylinder port 104 registers alternately during rotation, is provided with bleed ducts through which each cylinder port 104 communicates with the inlet port 20 before ceasing to communicate with the outlet port 21 and with the outlet port before ceasing to communicate with the inlet port. thereby reducing or eliminating the formation of shock waves. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the bleed ducts 108, 109 are formed as tapered grooves at both ends of ports 20, 21. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, bleed ports 115, 117 are provided at both ends of ports 20, 21 and communicate with ports 20, 21 through passages 113, 116 respectively. In a swash-plate pump or motor construction, Fig..1, the valve plate 22 floats between bearing surfaces 18, 29 on the cylinder block 8 and an end housing 2 and is radially located through a peg 25 by a screw-threaded rod 23 movable by a captive nut to angularly adjust the valve plate relative to a tiltable swash-plate 12 to vary the timing. Hydraulic balancing of the bearing surfaces of the valve plate is employed and limited radial float of the valve plate is controlled hydrostatically.
