Abstract

1,043,894. Reciprocating pumps and motors. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. July 23, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962], No. 29071/63. Heading F1A. In an hydraulic pump or motor, a cage 46, Fig. 2, rotatable with a cylinder block 30, defines with a member 54, a bearing 59 and pistons 36, a number of cavities 60 in which balls 62 are arranged between the pistons and cam surfaces on the bearing and the member 54 to eliminate high friction losses. The cam surface 64 on the member 54 is eccentrically disposed with respect to the cylinder block 30, the eccentricity being adjustable by screws 66 along the axis of symmetry between arcuate inlet and outlet ports 26 in a stationary valve plate 28. For this purpose the member 54 is provided with pegs 56 which locate a diametral groove 58 coincident with the axis of symmetry and formed in a stationary part 14 positioned in the housing 12 by a peg 68 and keyway 70. The cage 46 is secured to the cylinder block 30 by a dowel pin (not shown). The shaft 38 may project through the cylinder block, valve plate 28 and a member 16 containing the inlet and outlet passages. Reversal of the direction of rotation can be effected by shifting the member 54 to the opposite side of the shaft axis. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 9, the cage 46a is integral with the shaft 38a, and the balls 62a roll on an inner cam surface of the bearing 59a and an outer cam surface 64a on the member 54a. In other embodiments similar to that shown in Fig. 9, the bearing cam surface is frusto-conical and the member cam surface is cylindrical, or both cam surfaces are frustoconical, or are of convex or concave form such as segments of paraboloids, ellipsoids or hyperboloids.
