Abstract

919,615. Valves. ROCKWELL MANUFACTURING CO. July 31, 1959 [Aug. 12, 1958], No. 26318/59. Class 135. A main valve member coacting with a seat 24 consists of a washer 130 clamped by screws 128 between an annular member 116 and a flange 110 on a sleeve 100, and a pilot valve member 95 coacting with a seat provided by the washer 130 has a stem 90 passing through the sleeve 100 and connected by a pin 91 with an actuating stem 76 which is biased upwardly by a spring 84. A back-pressure valve comprising a disc 140 mounted on a sleeve 136 slidable on the sleeve 100 and loaded by a spring 144 coacts with a seat on the downstream side of the seat 24 to maintain a minimum pressure of e.g. 3 lb./s inch on the inlet side of the valve. When the stem 76 is depressed by an arm 61 mounted on a shaft 44 carrying a handle the pilot valve member is first opened allowing fluid to flow to the outlet through holes 108 in the sleeve 100, the main valve member being held closed by a spring 146 compressed between an interior flange 102 in the sleeve 100 and a flange 94 on the pilot valve stem. The main valve member is opened by engagement of the lower end of the stem 76 with the flange 102. Closure of the valve is under the control of a meter connected upstream of the valve and operatively associated through a latch box with a lever 70 carried by the shaft 44, the arrangement being such that the main valve member is closed just before completion of a predetermined delivery and the pilot valve member is closed when delivery is completed. The upper part 16 of the housing is secured to the main part 15 by four setscrews that permit assembly with the handle extending in any of four directions. Similarly, the part 15 has an inlet flange (not shown) permitting mounting on a pipe with the outlet facing in any of four directions. Holes 30 permit the draining, when the valve is closed, of any fluid that leaks past the stem 76 into the part 16. In a modification, the back pressure valve is omitted and the inlet and outlet are in alignment with each other and their axis is at right-angles to that of the stem 76.
