Abstract
926,713. Valves. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Jan. 6, 1960 [Jan. 1, 1959], No. 51/59. Class 135. A fluid-pressure regulating valve comprises a housing 1 divided by a flexible diaphragm 4 into an atmospheric chamber 6 and low pressure 5. A nozzle 9 secured to the housing and in communication with the inlet 2 extends through the atmospheric chamber and is a force-fit in a central aperture of the diaphragm 4. A valve seat 12 is formed on the end of the nozzle and co-operates with a flexible membrane 21 which is secured across the low-pressure chamber 5 and is provided with apertures 22 through which extend legs 27 of a backing plate 24. A spring 15 is located between an adjustable thrust member 16 and a backing plate 17 of the diaphragm 4 which, through the legs 27, urges the valve to the open position. In operation fluid entering through the inlet 2 flows through the nozzle 9, past the valve to the low-pressure chamber 5 and then through apertures 22 and apertures 26 formed in the backing plate 24 to the outlet 3, the position of the valve being governed by the pressure in the low-pressure chamber acting on the diaphragm 4 against the spring-loading 15. The pressure in the lowpressure chamber 5 also acts on the diaphragm 4 to seal the diaphragm and the nozzle 9, the nozzle preferably being provided with the shoulder 13. The backing plate 17 is recessed to receive a washer 18 which is a close fit on the nozzle 9 and the diaphragm 4 is provided with an aperture 19 such that, in the event of an excess pressure occurring in the low-pressure chamber 5, the diaphragm moves against the spring-loading and the backing plate 17 moves axially causing flexure of the washer 18 until the diaphragm moves away from the backing plate in the region of the aperture 19, thus allowing escape of fluid from the low-pressure chamber to the chamber 6.
