Abstract

918,893. Making Roots' blowers. WATEROUS CO. Jan. 18, 1961 [Jan. 20, 1960], No. 2112/61. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] The rotors of a Roots' blower are driven by meshing gears, the gear having such a number of teeth and being mounted in such angular position that a tooth centre is aligned with the centre of a rotor lobe and a tooth space is located midway between adjacent lobes, or vice versa. A jig is used to assemble the gear and the rotor. The rotor 15 rests on two of its lobes on a flat surface with its shaft held at each end in guide blocks 96. A plunger 117 in the bed of the jig is raised as hand wheel 123 is turned and the end of shaft 122 engages the tapered notch 120 of the plunger, causing the tapered upper end of the plunger 116 to engage a tooth space of gear 77 mounted on the shaft of the rotor. Arm 130 is pivoted down from the dotted line position to engage the uppermost tooth of the gear. The pivot end of arm 130 is connected to dial gauge 135 so that the position of the gear may be checked. The rotor is held down by a clamping bar (Fig. 6, not shown), holes are drilled through the gear and rotor shaft and taper pins are fitted.
