Abstract
Slaked, calcined dolomite is converted into magnesium hydroxide by mixing the dolomite with an aqueous brine containing from 0,15 to 1,0 gram molecule per litre of MgCl2 to cause flocculation of Mg(OH)2 and to convert the Ca(OH)2 of the dolomite into CaCl2, and maintaining a concentration of MgCl2 in the brine of at least 0,005 gram molecule per litre during the conversion. The precipitate is washed with water having a MgCl2 concentration of at least 0,005 gram molecule per litre, or containing a flocculant, e.g. starch. In Examples 1 and 2 slaked calcined dolomite is reacted with brines containing NaCl and MgCl2, and the Mg(OH)2 washed and filtered. In Example 3 slaked calcined dolomite grains are soaked in MgCl2 brine and then transferred from one vessel to another in a series of vessels in counterflow to brine of increasing MgCl2 concentration, allowed to react for increasing periods of time, and then washed by transfer through a series of vessels in counterflow to water.
