Abstract

Magnesium oxide in a finely divided (less than) 1 micron), substantially unhydrated state is reacted with bicarbonate hardness in water to provide the magnesium in solution as magnesium carbonate and then the water is treated with lime which precipitates the magnesium as a coagulant for other finely divided solids in the water.
