Abstract
A method for the purification of brine containing magnesium and possibly also calcium ions comprises adding to the brine sodium hydroxide, or slaked lime or a combination of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate, thereby precipitating the magnesium ion as magnesium hydroxide and the calcium ion, if sodium carbonate is used, as calcium carbonate, dissolving air under pressure in at least part of the treated brine, releasing the pressure to allow the air to be released from the brine as small bubbles which entrain the precipitate and bring it to the surface of the brine, and separating the precipitate thus accumulated at the surface of the brine. The treatment is preferably effected at a brine temperature of up to 100 DEG C. Coagulating or frothing agents may be added to the brine.
