Abstract

1337752 Zeolite SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 30 Nov 1970 [2 Dec 1969 22 Sept 1970] 56803/70 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 and C5] A novel zeolite KSO1 is characterized by (i) its X-ray diffraction pattern which includes the reflections listed in Table A (not shown), (ii) its molar composition expressed as 0À7-1À2 Na 2 O.Al 2 O 3 .4À7-5À3 SiO 2 .xH 2 O, where x is not more than 12, and (iii) specified absorption properties for hexane and 2,3-dimethylbutane. The zeolite is prepared from an aqueous mixture of sodium hydroxide and a cogel of aluminium hydroxide on a silica hydrogel, composition represented by 3À5-4À5 Na 2 O.Al 2 O 3 . 9À5-13À0 SiO 2 .100-400 H 2 O, by agitating at 70-160‹ C. at atmospheric, or autogenous pressure in an autoclave, until the product crystallizes (at least 4 hours), filtering, washing with water and drying at at least 100‹ C. Agitation is essential throughout the reaction (formation) to ensure the formation of the desired zeolite. The zeolite has value as a catalyst, a catalyst carrier, an adsorbent, extractant, drying agent, or ion exchanger. When used as a catalyst the zeolite is preferably stabilized exchanging with NH 4 <SP>+</SP>, H<SP>+</SP>, or Ca<SP>+</SP> + to reduce the Na<SP>+</SP> content to below 1%. The product zeolite when used as a catalyst may have ions of metals of Groups IB, IIB, VB, VI B , VIIB and/or VIII incorporated into it by ion exchange.
