Abstract

1506429 Zeolites UNION CARBIDE CORP 13 May 1975 19992/75 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B 1 and C5] A crystalline zeolite has a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 mole ratio of 4À6 to 5À4, a face centred cubic unit cell having an a o of greater than 24À45 to 24À55 Š, an Na 2 O/Al 2 O 3 mole ratio not greater than 0À25, an adsorptive capacity in the dehydrated state for oxygen of at least 26 wt. per cent at 100 m. Hg oxygen pressure and - 183‹ C., an ion-exchange capacity of 0À15 to 0À35 and having the essential X-ray powder diffraction pattern of zeolite Y with the proviso that the d-spacing thereof having the Miller Indices 331 is at least as great in intensity as the line thereof having the Miller Indices 533. Preferably the zeolite has a Na 2 O/Al 2 O 3 ratio below 0À038. It may be prepared from an ion-exchanged zeolite Y of formula (wherein A is H and/or NH 4 : y is 0-9), by heating to 550-800‹ C. for at least 15 minutes in an inert atmosphere containing sufficient steam to prevent dehydroxylation, removing at least a major portion of any NH 3 generated, cooling to below 350‹ C. at a sufficiently rapid rate. The Na ions in the product may be exchanged for H, NH 4 or Pd. The zeolites are used as hydrocarbon conversion catalysts (see Divisions B1 and C4-C5).
