Abstract

917,318. Belt gearing. GUNTER, J. K. Dec. 7, 1960 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 42170/60. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group IX] A drive for a carding-machine comprises a relatively large pulley 4, having a smooth periphery, which is driven from a relatively small positive driving pulley 32, keyed to the shaft 30 of an electric motor 26, by means of a positive driving-belt 38. On starting the machine, the motor 26 starts running at substantially its full operating speed and the belt 38 slips on the periphery of the driven pulley 4 to transmit uniform torque and to smoothly accelerate the machine to its operating speed. The motor 26 is mounted on an upright plate 18 which is adjustably bolted to the machine frame in order to vary the belt tension, adjustment being effected by means of a bolt 44 on loosening of securing bolts 24. The motor shaft carries at its other end a stripper pulley 52 which is radially aligned with a stripper roll drive pulley 56. A hinged guard 54 is provided to facilitate the positioning of a reversing drive belt 58. A starting switch 48 and reversing switch 50 for the motor 26 are mounted on the plate 18.
