Class 120(i) A machine for decorticating sisal and other fibrous leaves and of the kind wherein the leaves are passed through two rotary beater mechanisms by means of ropes or bands for decortication of two portions of the leaves successively has the beater mechanisms disposed about a driven vertical shaft which carries two pulley wheels driving the ropes and arranged so that the leaves will be gripped against one pulley while a portion is being treated and against the other pulley when the other portion is treated. Leaves are placed by manual or mechanical means on a feed conveyer 31 from which they are picked up by an intake rope 32 and a feed rope 38 and carried in a vertical position to a decorticating drum 12 operating in association with a stationary member 16. From this first decorticating point, the leaves are passed round an upper rope wheel 27 and a co-axial rope wheel 28 (not shown) against which the decorticated parts of the leaves are gripped by an output rope 42 and carried between a second decorticating drum 17 and stationary member 21, then onwards to a delivery point. The ropes 32, 38, 42 are driven by wheels 27 and 28 (not shown) on the vertical shaft 26 actuated by an electric motor located above the machine and connected through a manually operated clutch. The drums 12, 17 are driven directly from the motors through belts or chains. Rope 38 transmits drive to the conveyer 31. The drums 12, 17 are provided on their peripheries with T-section blades 23 and the stationary members have working surfaces formed in three parts capable of ready replacement.
