Abstract
641,051. Decorticating fibrous leaves. ROBEY & CO., Ltd., and LEES, P. W. Q. July 8, 1948. No. 18371. [Class 120(i)) A decorticating machine for the fibrous leaves of plants, particularly Mauritius hemp, incorporates crushing rollers adapted to crush the butt or bottom ends of the leaves, a pair of rotatable drums fitted with beaters, and means for gripping the crushed ends of the leaves and drawing the leaves upwards between the pair of beater drums which cooperate to decorticate both sides of the leaf simultaneously. As shown, leaves are placed transversely on conveyer 1 so that the butt ends are crushed between the rollers 5, 6. The crushed ends are then gripped between a rope or chain 26 and a grooved gripping wheel 11 which carry the leaves around and draw them upwards between a pair of revolving beater drums 27, 28 (not shown) so that the whole leaf, apart from the short butt end gripped between rope &c. 26 and wheel 11, is decorticated. When a leaf is released at the top of wheel 11 it slides down a delivery bar. Water may be discharged through jets onto the leaves during decortication by drums 27, 28. Rope &c. 26 is tensioned by a jockey pulley 21 and driven from a pulley 18. The undecorticated butt ends of the leaves may be cut off; alternatively, leaves may be passed from the delivery bar to a second gripping wheel and beater drums to decorticate the butt ends.
