Abstract

302,932. Knowles, G. Dec. 21, 1928. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 24, 1928]. Breaking and scutching apparatus. - Flax, hemp and similar fibres are treated in a machine to break and remove all shives or woody matter and to clean, comb, and polish the fibres. The material laid on a table 13 is fed to a series of pairs of breaking rollers 15 and thence over a sloping table 29 with a vertical extension 30. A roller 31 with blades 32 is adjustably mounted on the frame 11 to act on the material as it leaves the table 29, the centre of the roller being in a line at right angles to the lower end of the table. A rotary comb 37 with longitudinal rows of tangential pins 38 is situated just below the roller 31 and acts against the vertical extension 30. A roller 41 with blades 42 scrapes and polishes the material against the extension 30. The table 29 may be curved to the shape of the roller 31. The upper rollers 15 are driven by a gear 22 integral with a sprocket driven by a chain 24 from the main shaft 26. The rollers 31, 41, and comb 37 are driven by a chain situated on the opposite side of the machine to the chain 24 and also operated from the shaft 26.
