Abstract

1486338 Wind and water motors P A BARNES 23 July 1975 [30 Dec 1974] 56038/74 Heading FIT A water or wind powered machine comprises at least two drive vanes 6 rotatably mounted on supports 4, 5 extending radially from a rotatable output shaft 1, a rudder vane 14 connected to a sleeve 12 rotatably mounted on shaft 1, and a transmission providing a ratio of 1:2 between each vane 6 and sleeve 12. The transmission comprises an endless chain passing over a sprocket 10 on the vane 6 and a respective sprocket 16 on sleeve 12, the number of teeth on sprocket 10 being double that on 16. Rudder 14 is supported from sleeve 12 by bracket 13. Thus in a wind or water flow W each vane 6 rotates about its own axis while at the same time rotating about and driving output shaft 1, the latter driving an electric generator 2. An overload mechanism 9 for each vane 6 comprises a rectangular frame 16a rotatable with the shaft of sprocket 10 and rotatable on the vane shaft 8. The lower end 17 of the latter is in the form of a flat plate gripped between two springs 18 extending inwardly from the frame sides. Thus mechanism 9 allows slippage between shaft 8 and sprocket 10 at high flow speeds. In a modification rudder 14 is mounted on a separate shaft and transmits the flow direction W to sleeve 12 via mechanical means. Several shafts 1 may be provided with a single rudder.
