Abstract

917,298. Casting machines. LINDBERG ENGINEERING CO. Aug. 8, 1960 [Sept. 8, 1959], No. 27470/60. Class 83 (1). [Also in Groups XII and XXVIII] Apparatus for the discharge of molten metal from a melting furnace 11 connected by channels 13 to a pouring chamber 12 comprises a refractory crucible 15 having a tube 21 opening into the molten metal and a discharge tube 24, and a conduit 19 leading to a three-way valve 26 by which the crucible can be connected in turn to the suction side of a blower 27, to a vent 28, or to the pressure side of the blower. This results respectively in metal filling the crucible, dropping to the metal level in the furnace which is slightly lower than the inlet opening 22 of the tube 21, and being discharged from the crucible. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), valve 26 is replaced by a two-way valve by which conduit 19 is connected either to the suction or pressure side of the blower, and in the latter case the crucible is subject to a low or a high pressure by a valve controlling parallel tubes, one of which incorporates a pressurereducing valve. In an automatic control system, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), valve 26 comprises a multiple way hydraulic valve operated by oppositely disposed solenoids subjected to the over-riding control of an electric circuit incorporating a timer which is started subject to a casting machine being ready. The control circuit includes a sparkrod 73 which comes into operation when the liquid metal in the crucible is high enough. Specification 842,893 is referred to.
