Abstract

1,192,931. Induction heated ladles. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 Nov., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 50258/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] Molten metal is degassed in a ladle comprising a refractory crucible 1 having a C-shaped inductive heating channel 7 energized by a winding 16 on a windowed core 15, the ladle either being air-tight or being enclosed in an air-tight container (Fig. 2, not shown). A metal casing 3 and/or metal lining to the refractory lining 2 renders the ladle shown air-tight. The induction loop structure is in three separable parts 8, 9, 10 having mitred ends joined together by detachable clamps 14 and rendered air-tight by heat resistant gaskets or sealing rings 18. The induction loop structure is secured to the main casing by clamping together their flanges with interposed gaskets 18. A lid 19 is secured to the casing 3 in an air-tight manner by way of a peripheral flange 23 of the lid, a flange 24 at the top of the crucible and an interposed gasket 22. The core 15 is in two parts, one of which is mounted on a wheeled carriage to enable it to be separated from the other part and the ladle to be removed by its carrying yoke 4. Steel is degassed by drawing a vacuum over the melt by way of a draw off connection e.g. 21 or by passing an inert gas through an inlet 29 and bubbling it through the melt.
