Abstract

1378881 Apparatus for dispensing molten metal GKN GROUP SERVICES Ltd 18 Jan 1972 [19 Jan 1971] 2612/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] A casting apparatus comprises a container 15 for molten metal, an outlet 16 in the bottom of the container, an induction coil for melting metal in the container, and an apertured metal plate 18 located externally of the container and within the magnetic field of the induction coil and positioned so that molten metal from the container can pass through the aperture 19. The plate 18 may be of copper and may be cooled by water flowing in a tube 20. A refractory guide member 13 having an aperture 14 extends between the plate 18 and a shot duct 10 of a pressure diecasting machine. In use, a block 17 of the metal to be cast, e.g. iron, is placed in the container 15 and melted in such a way that the portion immediately adjacent the aperture 16 remains solid and this closes the aperture until the remainder of the block 17 has completely melted. When this last portion melts the entire contents of the crucible 15 are discharged rapidly and smoothly into the shot duct 10.
