Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for controlling the liquid metal level in a wheel type continuous-casting-machine comprises a level detector 11 having an air inlet connection 9 and a number of air outlet vents 14 at spaced intervals so that the rate of air escape from the detector is dependent on the number of unobscured vents, the member 11 being connected to a source of low pressure air through a restricted orifice 10 so that the pressure of air entering the member 11 is varied according to the number of unobscured vents; means 6, for controlling the rate of metal supply to the wheel, and means 7, 8 responsive to the air pressure in the detector for controlling the metal-supply control-means. Instead of, or in addition to the control gate 6 in the launder 4, the output of the air pressure amplifier 8 may be applied to pneumatic or pneumatic-electric means for controlling the tilting of the furnace pouring into the launder.
