Abstract

777,354. Continuous - casting machines. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and MORTON, J. S. July 1, 1955 [July 15, 1954], No. 20682/54. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XVIII] The level of metal in an openended water-jacketed continuouscasting mould 12 is indicated by supplying gas under pressure to restricted apertures 16 opening to the interior of the mould at different levels, and measuring the variations in the supply resulting from change in the number of apertures covered by the metal as the level of the latter varies. In the form shown, the apertures 16 incline downwardly from a channel 14, formed by a vertical groove in the wall of the mould and a cover-plate 15, and an inert gas is supplied at constant-pressure to said channel through a regulator 18 and a duct 17 with a restriction 19, the duct 17 at the mouldside of the restriction being connected to a pressure-transducer 20, adapted to convert pressure-variations to variations in an electric voltage, an electric-amplifier 21 and a penrecorder 22. Typical dimensions of the apertures and their spacing are specified. The transducer 20 preferably comprises a bellows operating an electrical potentiometer, and a known automatic-control system may be associated with the amplifier 21 for maintaining a substantially constant level in the mould by regulating either the rate of supply of moltenmetal to, or the rate of removal of the billet from, the mould.
