915,536. Humidifying apparatus. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. June 1, 1961 [June 1, 1960], No. 19394/60. Class 55 (2). An apparatus for humidifying gases, for example air or oxygen for medical purposes, comprises a water reservoir having an outlet for humidified gas and an inlet means for the admission of gas under pressure, said inlet means including a submersible diffusion head located towards the base of the reservoir and having a plurality of orifices for dividing the flow of gas into fine streams, a tube secured at one end to the diffusion head about the orifices and opening at its other end into the space above the water level in the reservoir, a baffle plate spaced from and extending across the open end of the tube, and water inlet ports in the tube below the water level in the reservoir which function to have a restricting effect upon the flow of water into the tube, the relationship between the total area of the orifices and the total area of the water inlet ports being such that, when the gas flow rate is greater than a predetermining value, the rate at which water is forced out of the open end of the tube exceeds the rate at which it can flow back through the ports. In the Figure, air is introduced via 5 and orifices 14 and is withdrawn via 7. Tube 15 has water inlet ports 16, and a baffle system 17 and 18 is arranged above the top of the tube.
