A method of regulating the withdrawal of pulp from two or more thickeners 1, 2 and 3 is characterized by the pulp being withdrawn from each thickener in two separate component streams, the flow of one component stream from each thickener being regulated depending on the density of the pulp in the associated thickener and of the other component stream being regulated depending on the sum of the flow from all the thickeners. A device for carrying out this method comprises a density measuring device 18, 19, 20 which controls the flow of the first component stream 1a, 2a, 3a through setting members 12, 14, 16 into a tank 10 in which is a volume measuring device 21 which regulates the flow of the second component streams 1b, 2b, 3b by means of setting members 13, 15, 17. All the setting members, 12 to 17, consist of a slide or other valve, a control head and a motor which sets the valve and are constructed to give a minimum flow of the component streams, 1a to 3b, independently of regulation. The density devices 18, 19, 20 and the volume device 21 consist of dip-tubes through which compressed air flows. An optical or acoustic signal may give warning of high levels in the tank 10. An alternative arrangement illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown) withdraws the two component streams from each tank through a Y-tube attached to a single outlet instead of from two separate outlets as in Fig. 1.
