Abstract
1493572 Continuous casting DAVY INTERNATIONAL Ltd 3 Jan 1975 [4 Oct 1973] 46497/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] Difference of pressure between a melt reservoir 1 and at least one chamber 4 is created (e.g. by introduction of air through a pipe 17 or by suction of air from the chamber (4) so that molten metal such as Cu, flows from the reservoir 1 and rises from a level 19 into the chamber 4 to a level 20 higher than its outlet 7 which leads to a mould 8 from which a casting 21 is withdrawn. There may be four chambers 4 side-by-side and located in the same vessel as the reservoir 1, as shown. To cease casting from a chamber, a valve 15 is turned so that air enters and forces down the melt level 20. The relevant mould 8 can then be removed and a valve 22 slid down to seal the outlet 7. In the arrangement where the pressure differential is created by suction, Fig. 3 (not shown), each chamber 4 may have its own air pump or own valve connecting it to the one pump. There may be a cut-out device for each chamber 4 to cut off the suction if a certain melt level is exceeded. Scrap or cathode Cu is passed through a slot 12 in a cover plate 11 to be heated and melted in a region 10 by means not shown. The level is maintained by further feeding during casting. Ducts 14 with induction heaters 13 keep the metal molten.
