Abstract

1377628 Pumping molten metals T B STAMP 19 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 44543/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division F1] Apparatus for pouring molten lead in metered amounts into a series of moulds mounted on an endless conveyer comprises a container 10 from which molten lead is pumped by a pump unit 13 to a discharge nozzle 26, the pump unit 13 being mounted by bolts on a support block 12 welded to a wall 11 of container 10 such that the inlet 21 is close to the bottom of container 10 so as to be submerged, the metal being pumped via passages 17, 20 in unit 13 and block 12, and passage 29 in a casting 28, also attached to block 12, to the nozzle 26. Heating means 49 are located in container 10 and the pump is dismountable from the block 12. The plunger 15 of pump unit 13 is connected to the moving member of a pneumatic ram 19. Non-return valves 23, 24 in the inlet and outlet 21, 22 have spring biased control knobs 51 connected thereto by stems, the knobs 51 being depressable to drain the pump of metal as it is lifted out for inspection. The nozzle 26 has a pair of horizontal slits 40 which discharge the molten metal over a lip 43 of a cover member 44 fixed to the inclined end surface of the main nozzle body 35. The metal flows over lip 43 into vertical discharge passages 45 in member 40. Heating means 27, 39 in the casting 28 and nozzle body 35 progressively heat the metal to the required discharge temperature as it flows towards the nozzle. Such flow is upwards towards the nozzle at 2 degrees to the horizontal, the support block 20 being arranged at 2 degrees to the vertical, so that movement of air in the molten lead towards the nozzle is facilitated.
