Abstract

1,220,020. Discharging molten metal. USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc. 19 Nov., 1969 [6 Dec., 1968], No. 56690/69. Heading F4B. The flow of molten steel from the bottom outlet 20 of a tundish 12 into the inlet 15 of a vacuum degassing vessel 10 beneath it, is selectively prevented or allowed by the interposition of slidable gates therebetween, the gates either being solid or having nozzle apertures extending therethrough. The gates are slid into sealing engagement with the tundish 12 and a spring urged inlet seal member 23 of the vessel 10, into alignment with the openings 20, 15 by a reciprocable ram 33 carried on the vessel 10 thereby knocking away a gate already positioned between them. A number of the gates are carried on a tray 36 reciprocable transversely of the ram 33 by means of a driven rack 37, to bring each gate when required into alignment with ram 33. To allow tundish 12 to be removed from vessel 10 without destroying the vacuum in the latter, a gate 47 composed of separable upper and lower parts is interposed between them by ram 33. Flanges (not shown) on the separable upper part engage between beveled guide bars 52, 54 provided on the tundish, below its outlet opening 20 so that the separable upper part is lifted away with the tundish and seals off its outlet 20 when the tundish is removed from the vessel. The lower part of the gate 47 remains in position over the inlet seal member 23, being drawn against it by the vacuum, and so retains the vacuum in the vessel 10.
