Abstract

An air-cooled condenser for a distillation column comprises condenser-elements 8, 8a, made up of rows of upright tubes provided with fins, the condenser-elements being arranged to form at least one polygonal jacket (there are two hexagonal jackets in the embodiment <PICT:0916620/III/1> shown) surrounding the head of the column with lateral clearance, and fans 21 above the head of the column to cause cooling air to flow between the tubes. In the embodiment shown, there are four fans 21 accommodated in apertures 20 in the end-plate 19 of hexagonal lining 18, which is provided, where facing condenser-elements 8a, with apertures corresponding with the surface area of the elements. The fans are driven by variable-speed motors 24, and generally draw cooling-air through the condenser-jackets into the space between the inner jacket and the head of the distillation column, and then blow it out through the end-plate 19. But when the atmospheric temperature is very low and readilysolidifiable products are being distilled, it is advisable to reverse the direction of flow of the cooling-air so that it is preheated on the outer wall of the column before it brushes over the condenser tubes. The hot vapours pass out of head of the column through connection-pieces 3, which are arranged at uniform distances apart around the periphery of the column-head. The vapours then flow, through annular conduit 5 and connection-pieces 6, into the tubes of the condenser. The condensate and inert gases flow into annular conduit 11, which is connected to reflux and withdrawal conduits. Spraying nozzles 25, for moistening the cooling-air, are arranged between the two condenser-jackets; these nozzles face into the flow of the cooling-air current, and reduce the temperature of the air after it has flowed through the first jacket.
