Abstract

<PICT:0908123/III/1> An air-cooled condenser for a distillation column comprises a housing, forming an upward extension of the column immediately above the topmost exchange plate 3, hairpin tubes 11 mounted in a plate 10 so that one end of each tube is connected to passage 12 and the other end is connected to passage 14, and a fan 13 for blowing cooling air through the tubes. Baffles 9 deflect the vapour as it rises through the condenser. Uncondensed components are withdrawn through pipe 8b. Liquid head product may be withdrawn through pipe 1b. Some of the warm air, discharged from tubes 11, may be re-circulated to the tubes via flap-valve 16, which is regulated by servo-motor 17 controlled by a thermostat (not shown) for maintaining a uniform temperature of the cooling air. The condenser tubes consist of concentric tubes 18 and 19 (Fig. 4) made of material of high thermal conductivity. The inner tube is provided with radial ribs 18a. The outer tube is made of corrosion-resisting material.
