Abstract
1,234,446. Distillation apparatus; desalination of water. AUSCOTENG PTY Ltd. 26 July, 1968 [26 July, 1967], No.35701/68. Heading BIB. Saline water is submitted to reduced pressure in evaporator 1, from the external walls of which external heat exchanger fins 2, whereby vaporization of water occurs at substantially ambient temperature; the vapours flow to condenser 10 from which the condensate (desalinated water) is from time to time withdrawn, together with air, by pump 22. Raw saline water is pumped through the coil 11 and jacket 16 of condenser 10, and some of the heated effluent water is then supplied to evaporator 1 through pipe 18 and float chamber 4. Waste brine is withdrawn from the evaporator by pump 20 whenever the density rises to a predetermined value. In Fig. 3, the condenser 60 is disposed inside the evaporator 61 which is provided with external fins 75, and direct heat transfer takes place between the condenser and the evaporator. A pump 76 draws vapour from the evaporator and discharges it into the condenser. The condensate flows down barometric leg 62, and the air is withdrawn through pipe 64 by pump 66. An apparatus is described which has the condenser of a refrigerator in the water-space of the evaporator, the refrigerator-evaporator being in the vapour space of the steam condenser.
