Abstract
903,397. Fluid-cooling apparatus. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM.-GES.]. Dec. 29, 1958, No. 41910/58. Class 64 (3). A fluid cooler intended for the cooling of liquids, vapours or gases without change of phase, comprises rows of tubular heat-exchange elements carrying the fluid to be cooled, arranged above a suction chamber 6 having lateral inlets 7, 7a for a gaseous coolant such as air positively impelled (e.g. by fans 5) over the elements, the fluid to be heated being distributed to the elements through a common, centrally-disposed, supply conduit 2 and cooled fluid being collected from the elements in conduits 3, 3a extending generally along the sides of the suction chamber, the arrangement being such that the hottest zone of heated coolant located above the middle zone of the suction chamber, i.e. in the region of the conduit 2, is screened from the lateral inlets of the suction chamber by the cooler streams of coolant which have passed over those cooler portions of the heat-exchange elements remote from the said middle zone and hence the more highly heated coolant is prevented from being drawn again into the suction chamber through the lateral inlets. In the form shown, two side-byside rows of elements are shown and each element comprises two sections 1, la interconnected in a gable arrangement by conduits 4 serving as expansion compensating means. A row of the fans 5 is associated with each row of elements. Re-entry of the more highly heated coolant into the suction chamber 6 is prevented at the ends of the apparatus by baffles (not shown).
