Abstract
784,747. Cold separation of gas mixtures. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS. GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. July 14, 1954 [July 15, 1953], No. 20627/54. Class 8(2). In a low temperature gas mixture fractionating system wherein a low boiling point fraction, e.g., nitrogen vapour from air from a column 1 operating at substantially atmospheric pressure is fed through a duct 24 to a condensation space adjacent the freezer of a regriferator 25 of the reversed hot gas engine type and liquid nitrogen is returned through a duct 27 to act as reflux, the passage of vapour from the boiler 6 to the fractionating spaces 2, 3 is restricted e.g., by an aperture 9 in a partition 8 whereby the normal operating pressure in the boiler 6 is maintained above atmospheric. In operation atmospheric air drawn through a duct 22 by the sub-atmospheric pressure maintained in the nitrogen condensation space of the refrigerator 25 by a liquid nitrogen lock 29 traverses staggered apertures 16 of cooling plates 15 where it is freed of water and carbon-dioxide and thereafter passes along an annular duct 7 surrounding the boiler 6 to the fractionating spaces 2, 3. Liquid oxygen flows down a duct 10 to the boiler 6 from which oxygen vapour is discharged down a duct 13, through apertures 18 of plates 17 and an outlet 23.
